A Career at the Critical Core of Transplant Medicine
Dr. Shakti Swaroop is an accomplished Transplant Anaesthesiologist with extensive experience in the highly specialised and demanding field of organ transplantation, perioperative medicine and critical care.
Having been involved in more than 3,000 transplant procedures, his professional journey has placed him at the critical intersection where surgical expertise, advanced anaesthesia, intensive care and multidisciplinary coordination come together to give patients another chance at life.
Dr. Swaroop completed his MBBS at MKCG Medical College, Berhampur. His career has taken him through some of India's leading transplant centres — Medanta, Gurugram, followed by Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad and AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad — exposing him to high-volume and complex transplant programmes and strengthening his expertise in the management of critically ill patients undergoing major organ transplantation.
As a transplant anaesthesiologist, Dr. Swaroop's role extends far beyond the conventional boundaries of anaesthesia. From assessing medically complex recipients before transplantation to maintaining vital physiological stability through hours of intricate surgery and supporting the transition into critical post-operative care, his work demands precision, anticipation and decisive clinical judgement at every stage.
It is a speciality in which circumstances can change within seconds—and where experience matters profoundly.
His extensive involvement in transplantation has also given him a rare perspective on the ecosystem behind every successful transplant. He has witnessed first-hand the extraordinary coordination between donor families, transplant coordinators, surgeons, anaesthesiologists, intensivists, nursing teams and organ-allocation networks that must occur before a recipient can receive the gift of another chance.
Building Liver Transplant Programmes in India and Beyond
Dr. Swaroop has been a pioneer in starting liver transplant programmes at 25 centres across India — including in Odisha — and in 12 countries across the globe.
Every new programme brings liver transplantation within reach of patients who would otherwise have had to travel far from home, and from their families, for a chance at life.
In Odisha, it means patients can increasingly receive transplant care closer to home.
Beyond the Operating Theatre
Beyond clinical transplantation, Dr. Swaroop has remained actively engaged with the broader organ donation and transplantation ecosystem, including NOTTO, contributing to a cause that extends beyond hospitals and operating theatres.
As a Founder Member of Eternal Gift Foundation, he brings this depth of transplant experience to the Foundation's larger mission—strengthening organ-donation awareness, supporting patients and families affected by organ failure, and helping build a more connected and compassionate transplant ecosystem.
For Dr. Swaroop, organ donation is not an abstract cause. It is something whose impact he has witnessed repeatedly and at extraordinarily close quarters.
He has seen what happens when years of illness meet a possibility.
When a waiting family receives a call.
When an organ reaches an operating theatre.
And when an entire medical team works towards giving one individual another opportunity to live.
It is this experience that shapes his commitment to Eternal Gift Foundation.
Through Eternal Gift Foundation, Dr. Shakti Swaroop seeks to take the experience accumulated across thousands of transplant procedures beyond the operating theatre—towards greater awareness, stronger patient support and a society that understands the extraordinary power of the gift of life.
